Nestling in the hills between Umbertide, Montone and Pietralunga is the magnificent little abbey of San Faustino, with a whole slice of history in its stone walls. A thousand years ago it was a retreat for Benedictine monks and latterly a major partisan base during WW2. The buildings were saved from ruin some years ago by the present owners who are slowly and carefully restoring them. The earliest part of the complex is the ancient 9th century bell-tower, retaining its old bells that can still be (and are) rung. Most of the 'L' plan building is medieval, with additions up to the 18th C, and currently offers over 35 rooms totalling about 750 square metres internally. All structural work, water/drainage systems, central heating conduits and most of the electrical systems have been completed, with many main rooms finished, currently providing 10 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. More work is required to complete and personalize the whole complex, however. Many architectural details such as the vaulted chapel and adjoining sacristy, with its stone steps into the tower, will be beautiful features when fully restored. The property is situated in a wonderful location, just 15 minutes from the Tiber valley and main highway yet with total privacy. There are beautiful views to the Appenines beyond, and not a sound from anywhere. In 1450 even the Saint, Beato Ranieri, was struck enough by its spiritual energy to have his vision of the Holy Lamb here. Experts in geomancy and feng-shui have attested to its 'golden energy'.
